This article is the transcript of EPI 021. Home perfumes — Creating a room spray — part II

↳ Today I will continue the column — Home perfumes — Creating a room spray — and this will be part II of the project.
↳ You can find part I in episode 17.
↳ My idea is to create a fresh ROOM SPRAY that makes the ambiance more energetic. Something cheerful and vibrant, to be used while exercising at home, for example, or when we are engaged in any DIY art project, or simply when we are hosting a party for family and friends.
↳ I want this ROOM SPRAY to be focused on CITRUS.
↳ And I also want, when using this product, to feel as if a vast CITRUS ORCHARD has been teleported into my home, transplanted in the center of the living room.
↳ In this episode, I will choose the possible INGREDIENTS, as well as choose the structure of the ACCORDS.
↳ To choose the possible ingredients, I used the methodology I described in the previous episode, but I will not repeat the process here as it is quite time-consuming.
↳ From the list of INGREDIENTS I know, and currently possess, I selected the following:
↳ EO Bergamot,
↳ Lemon EO,
↳ Sweet Orange EO,
↳ Petitgrain EO, all for their citrus characteristics,
↳ Cassis base,
↳ Cis-3-Hexenol,
↳ Stemone, all for their green characteristics,
↳ Neroli EO,
↳ Florol,
↳ Hedione,
↳ Citronellol, all for their floral characteristics,
↳ Dihydromyrcenol, this for its aromatic characteristics,
↳ Cedramber,
↳ Iso E Super, both for their woody characteristics.
↳ I want the main impact of this perfume to be its citrus and green characteristics. But — as the INGREDIENTS with these characteristics are mostly top notes — I will create a FLORAL ACCORD with INGREDIENTS that are mostly heart notes — to balance the PERFUME and give it a longer and better duration. And, to complete, I will also create a WOODY ACCORD, with base notes to support the previous ACCORDS.
↳ Now I will smell all the CITRUS INGREDIENTS using paper strips, that is, each INGREDIENT on its own paper strip. I smell all the strips at the same time so that I can perceive the general aroma, that is, the multiple aroma of these INGREDIENTS in simultaneous interconjugation — and from there the formula of this perfume will finally begin to be structured.
↳ When smelling the paper strips, I realized that I have to balance the SWEET ORANGE, the LEMON and the DIHYDROMYRCENOL — and only after having these 3 INGREDIENTS in the correct proportions will I add the PETIT GRAIN and the BERGAMOT.
↳ Now I repeat this process — but with the GREEN INGREDIENTS.
↳ When smelling the paper strips, I realized that I should give more prominence to the CASSIS BASE — I will balance it with STEMONE and only then add a little CIS-3-HEXENOL. CIS-3-HEXENOL is very pungent, and I must therefore prevent it from being too pronounced in the perfume formula.
↳ Now I repeat the process — but with the FLORAL INGREDIENTS.
↳ When smelling the paper strips, I realized that perhaps CITRONELLOL is dispensable in this perfume. I will start by working with NEROLI, FLOROL and HEDIONE.
↳ I repeat the process once again — now with the WOODY INGREDIENTS.
↳ When smelling the paper strips, I realized that CEDRAMBER has a very dry and masculine smell, and that it may not be the most suitable for use in this project. I will focus my attention more on ISO E SUPER — and perhaps I will give up using HEDIONE in the FLORAL ACCORD as I believe it is much more appropriate to use it here — in this WOODY ACCORD.
↳ And having finally smelled, that is, olfactively evaluated, all the INGREDIENTS, I will meanwhile structure the first formulas of the respective ACCORDS.
↳ In the following part — III — of this column (in a few weeks) I will tell you how this whole process went.
↳ Next week, in episode 022, we will try to understand what OLFACTORY CULTURE is.
↳ I would like to inform you that JARILO has launched a free ebook — the complete guide where you can learn all the tricks to enhance the aromatic diffusion of your candles. I will leave the respective link in the notes of this episode.
↳ I also remind you that we have moved our Jarilo store and it is now located not at
but at
↳ Thank you for listening to this episode of the podcast 'Todos os caminhos vão dar ao aroma'. If you liked it, don't forget to subscribe — share with friends — leave a comment — or send an email to todososcaminhosvaodaraoaroma@gmail.com.
↳ Let me know by email if you use room sprays, and, if so, what you like most about the ones you usually use. I would love to create a collection of room sprays for JARILO and your opinion would be a great help.
↳ See you next week.
Happy olfactory experiences!
