The podcast 'Todos os caminhos vão dar ao aroma' is a podcast sponsored by Jarilo. In this podcast, Mariana, Jarilo's founder, explores the world of perfumery and tries to discover how perfume is made.
This article is the transcript of EPI 015. Creating a personalised perfume (for someone special)
[Start of transcript]
↳ In last week's episode, I mentioned that one of the reasons we learn perfumery is to be able to create a completely personalised perfume — a specific perfume to offer to someone dear to us: someone from our family circle, someone from our circle of friends, etc.
↳ The idea of creating a perfume especially for someone else has always greatly appealed to me, and so I will begin this new project, which you can follow here on the podcast over the coming period.
↳ I will, therefore, design a personalised perfume for Ricardo, my husband — who — knowing he has no say in the matter — readily volunteered to be my guinea pig.
↳ In this episode, I will focus on the BRIEF (i.e.: the document that will serve as my guide to create this perfume) and in future episodes, I will continue with the creation of the accords and the final formula.
↳ I started by conducting a detailed survey with my husband to get an idea of what kind of perfume he would like to have.
↳ From question to question, I asked if he prefers a perfume———
———warm or fresh,
———more airy or more structured,
———more abstract or more realistic,
———with or without a sweet facet,
———dry or humid,
———how long the perfume should last,
———whether the sillage is important or not,
———if he prefers a linear perfume or one that evolves over time,
———what season to use this perfume in,
———and if he prefers a more masculine or unisex perfume.
↳ And he replied that he prefers a perfume———
———warmer — but not too warm or heavy,
———airy,
———abstract,
———not sweet,
———dry,
———that lasts about 8 hours,
———without sillage,
———that is linear,
———to be used all year round,
———and unisex.
↳ I also asked———
———what smells he likes,
———what he wants to feel when wearing this perfume
———and what colours he wants associated with it.
↳ And he replied———
———that he likes musk scents, and incense, woods, resins, sea air, spices, lemon and mint,
———that he wants to feel self-confidence, energy and mental clarity when wearing the perfume,
———and that the colours he wants associated with his perfume are sky blue/sapphire, lime green, orange and also nuances of honey/resin.
↳ After understanding what kind of perfume my husband would like to wear, we jointly created a scenario and a story for that perfume to tell when smelled (similar to what I did with the PERFUME TO EVOKE SPRING, in episode 010 and 014).
↳ We concluded that we wanted this perfume to be able to evoke a small house in front of an immense beach, in the middle of a hot summer day.
We imagined this little house containing only one room, with white washed walls; a house right next to the beach, perhaps 6 or 7 metres above the sea.
It's a very hot day but the thick walls, internally lined with blue and white tiles, provide corners of cool shade inside the dwelling.
The exterior walls brush against the sand, all adorned with aloe vera, mints, lemon trees and pink pepper.
There are clay pots scattered here and there, as well as a metallic watering can on a green wheelbarrow; and all around are fragments of logs and reeds that drifted in with the tide.
The house has a wooden door painted blue (faded, peeling paint) topped by a frosted glass transom.
Swallows, seagulls and sparrows fly over the landscape.
The sea breeze — the sea air — intertwined with the smell of lemon and pink pepper enters through the transom, into the house.
↳ And in this way, we have a DESCRIPTIVE BRIEF and a CREATIVE BRIEF for this perfume, which will be my guides in this process.
↳ The next steps will be to flowchart this story in detail and associate one or more OLFACTORY DESCRIPTOR TERMS with each detail and — consecutively — associate one or more ingredients with each olfactory descriptor term.
↳ Then, choose the ACCORDS, work on the ACCORDS, and arrive at the FINAL FORMULA of this perfume.
↳ I will share the entire process here on the podcast; stay tuned.
↳ In the next episode, we will study some more ingredients and continue to create an OLFACTORY DIARY.
↳ I also take this opportunity to say that we have moved our Jarilo store and it is now located not at
but at
↳ Thank you for listening to this episode of the podcast 'Todos os caminhos vão dar ao aroma'. If you liked it, don't forget to subscribe — share with friends — leave a comment — or send an email to todososcaminhosvaodaraoaroma@gmail.com.
↳ I would love to know: if you could have a perfume made especially for you, what kind of perfume would it be? and what story would it tell?
Send me an email telling me all about it.
↳ Until next time.
