Home fragrances — Creating a room spray — part I | EPI 017 All Paths Lead to Aroma Podcast

The podcast 'Todos os caminhos vão dar ao aroma' is a podcast sponsored by Jarilo. In this podcast, Mariana, the founder of Jarilo, explores the world of perfumery and tries to discover how perfume is made.

This article is the transcript of EPI 017. Home fragrances — Creating a room spray — part I

[Beginning of transcription]

↳ Today I want to talk to you about HOME FRAGRANCES. Having a fragrant home is not a necessity but an extra. It's like a spice to make our daily lives more special. It's a way to reformulate our ambience, our space-of-being, making it more creative, stimulating, intimate, comfortable, so that it reflects our personality more.

↳ We have several ways to perfume our home, such as: scented candles, room sprays, scented ceramic pieces, aromatic sticks, essential oil diffusers, incense, etc.

↳ My favorite way to perfume the house is with scented candles, because they have several characteristics, gathered in a single product.

↳ With a scented candle we can perfume the house both when it's unlit and when it's lit. The scent that the candle exudes when lit is called HOT THROW. The scent that the candle exudes when unlit is called COLD THROW. Candles have a flame that illuminates and creates truly special atmospheres, and, as decorative pieces, they can help make our home more consistent with our personality and its various moods.

↳ It was because I loved all these characteristics of candles that I created Jarilo, a brand of handmade scented candles. (For these reasons and also to be closer to Perfumery, of course).

↳ But candles have a very big technical limitation in terms of creating perfumes. Aromatic ingredients behave somewhat unpredictably when in contact with the heat of the flame. For example, an ingredient may not withstand the candle flame and not even release its aroma, or it may be very reactive and, therefore, increase the risk of fire.

↳ Thus, at Jarilo, we made the conscious choice not to design our own perfumes or essential oil blends, but opted for a curation of the best fragrance suppliers for candles available on the market, who work in very complete laboratories and have the resources to test safety, calculate the flashpoint, and ensure that each perfume is stable, pleasant and, above all, safe.

↳ I'm not particularly fond of aromatic sticks, because I have the feeling that the perfume gets 'old', although they are pieces that look very beautiful in a home's decoration; or maybe it's just because I haven't found one I liked yet, one that meets my aromatic sensibilities.

↳ As for incense, I don't use it at all — because I really don't like the smell of burnt wood personally, which bothers me cerebrally, and even makes me physiologically nauseous.

↳ As for essential oil diffusers and scented ceramic pieces, these are products I have never explored. Who knows if in the near future I won't end up trying them———?

↳ What I really like, besides scented candles, are ROOM SPRAYS — which are actually perfumes, but specifically indicated for the home — so we can spray curtains, rugs, sofas, beds, towels, etc. with them.

↳ And what fascinates me most — what attracts me most — currently — about this product is that I can create my own ROOM SPRAY with facilitated safety. This is because A ROOM SPRAY does not have a flame and, therefore, there is no risk of the ingredients influencing the plausibility of fires. And by complying with the IFRA standard, we will have a safe product.

↳ And if we make a ROOM SPRAY with an alcohol base, it is even more feasible — because we won't have to worry about preservatives — since alcohol itself already fulfills that function.

↳ So, here I go starting another project here on the podcast — it's already the third. I'm going to create a ROOM SPRAY.

↳ My idea is to create a fresh ROOM SPRAY that makes the ambience more energetic. Something cheerful and vibrant, to be used while exercising at home, for example, or when we are engaged in some DIY artistic project, or simply when we throw a party for family and friends.

↳ I want this ROOM SPRAY to be focused on CITRUS.

↳ I want, when using this product, to feel as if a vast CITRUS ORCHARD has been teleported into my home, transplanted into the center of the living room.

↳ Consulting my olfactory diary, I saw which ingredients made sense for this project.

And so, I noted down the following ingredients:

———BERGAMOT EO

———CASSIS BASE

———CIS-3-HEXENOL

———LEMON EO

———SWEET ORANGE EO

———PETITGRAIN EO

———STEMONE

———CITRONELLOL

———FLOROL

———HEDIONE

———NEROLI EO

———CEDRAMBER

———and finally, ISO E SUPER.

↳ And — based on the olfactory families of these ingredients — I decided to make a ROOM SPRAY with a WOODY BASE, a FLORAL HEART and a CITRUS AND GREEN TOP.

↳ Continue to follow the podcast, to find out about the evolution of this project.

↳ In the next episode, we will focus our attention again on the FIRST of these THREE PROJECTS currently underway.

That is, I will continue to develop with you the project titled A PERFUME TO EVOKE SPRING.

And that will be, therefore, part III of it.

↳ I also take this opportunity — and once again — to say that we have moved our Jarilo store and that it is now located not at

but at

↳ Thank you for listening to this episode of the podcast 'Todos os caminhos vão dar ao aroma'. If you enjoyed it, don't forget to subscribe — share with friends — leave a comment — or send an email to todososcaminhosvaodaraoaroma@gmail.com.

↳ I would love to know: if you habitually use ROOM SPRAYS and, if so, what you like most about the ROOM SPRAYS you use. I plan to create a collection of ROOM SPRAYS for Jarilo and your opinion would be a great help.

↳ Feel free to use my email inbox for this.

↳ See you next time.
